How Coach has Helped Families

Here are some things that education professionals, parents and students have said about Kathy Edwards at COACH:

It has been my privilege to work with many wonderful families across the years. For reasons of confidentiality, I have not listed full names of any of the students or families with whom I have worked. If you would like specific references, please contact me. Below I have summarized a few of the situations in which I have been able to help families.

First Scenario
A young man was having difficulty in private school and did not pass the entrance exam for private high school. The student was evaluated several years prior and found to have significant auditory processing problems. Parents had paid for this private evaluation. The boy is now entering public school and parents were told just to register him and deal with any problems next year.

COACH was contacted and assisted family by contacting school and writing letter to request testing of need for special education or Section 504 services. Evaluation plan signed and student to be tested immediately upon return to school in fall.

Many families do not realize that although they have a child in private school, the local public school is still responsible to identify children in the private schools who are not achieving or who are underachieving. Their responsibility is then to discuss the situation with the family and private school, devise and evalute a plan in conjunction with the family and private school, conduct all psychological, educational, speech-language and other evaluations free of charge, conduct meeting to discuss findings of evaluations, offer and Individualized Education Plan at the local public school, or offer Resource or Speech Language support at the private school.

Second Scenario

An elementary student with emotional problems in public school had been placed by the school district in a special program for emotionally disturbed children. No Functional Analysis done. No Behavior Plan done.
Student was placed on half days for aggressive behavior. No afternoon tutoring or program was available

COACH was contacted and I showed the family two local Non Public Schools in area which specialize in the treatment and education of emotionally disturbed students. We contacted school district with request to enroll in selected school. Non Public School accepted the student, who is progressing well.
Parents do not always realize that the public schools contract with a series of Non Public Schools that specialize in the education of children with certain disabling conditions. These schools are costly, but are part of the continuum of educational services available to students under the law.

Third Scenario

An elementary school student entered first grade at new school on an IEP for speech/language services. Parents requested that their child be retained in first grade since she was immature and had difficulty keeping up in kindergarten in previous school. School refused retention, saying the child would be "just fine."
The little girl struggled through 1st grade, and one period of Resource Specialist Service was added. No additional testing was done. The little girl struggled through 2nd grade and second period of Resource Specialist Service was added. No testing was done.

COACH was contacted. I contacted local school. Formalized psychological, educational, speech language testing was requested. The little girl showed significant problems with visual and auditory memory, processing, and attentional issues. She was qualified to receive special education services under the disabling condition of Other Health Impaired. Parent request for retention in 2nd grad was honored, and student will be attending new school next year. Student request for special education summer program with special ed transportation honored.

Many parents know that the educational setting is not working for their child. I am a firm believer in the concept that parents know their own child better than any educator. The additional and ongoing problems of this little girl should have been addressed at the time they occurred with additional testing and additional services.
